Children In The Civil War For my project on the Civil War, I researched the children that were around to see it. I think it’s important to know how this war impacted children, or even the involvement of children, because of what kids are like today. Today kids sit around and play video games about shooting people, back then, sometimes kids had to. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, kids from both the Union and the Confederacy said goodbye to some of their family members or even joined the military themselves. In fact, roughly twenty percent of Civil War soldiers were younger than eighteen. For the Union, this was the minimum recruitment age. However in times of war, laws were easily overlooked. The Confederacy, however, had no set age limit. Most youngsters weren’t exactly the fighters, but rather musicians. Technically, their job description didn’t include fighting, but if need be, it wasn’t uncommon for one to arm themselves and defend their lives. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/general-article/grant-kids/) I find it interesting to think that teenagers today’s biggest concerns compared to those during the war. Today you’ll find teenagers whose biggest problems in life are getting a five page essay on the Civil War in on time, acne, or those shoes they saw at the mall being ten dollars over the spending limit that their mom gave them. Back then teenagers were running through a hailstorm of bullets, watching as their friends and brothers fell inches away from them. They were thirsty for clean water, hungry for food, yearning for their mothers, or sometimes, even just wishing to be dead so it would end. Some assisted surgeons and sawed off damaged arms and legs. They endured the terrors that were associate... ...ive. (http://www.ducksters.com/history/civil_war/life_during_the_civil_war.php) Slave children were also impacted by this war, however slightly more positively. For many, this war meant freedom. Before the war had quite started, enslaved children had escaped to the North, either with their families or individually. When the war started, many of these families and children would slip into Union territory. Once Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, floods of these families came over. Homes for freed slaves was often no more than a wooden packing crate. Food was treasure, and disease was everywhere. Hope was not lost though. Northerners established schools that would teach blacks of all ages how to read and write. Soon, young African Americans â€Å"pulled a white teenager† and joined the army. They fought for the Union cause and thus experienced the terrors of war.

Strong Centralized Government

There is no doubt that Iraq needs a strong centralized government. This assertion is based on the following factors: 1) the rise of radical Islam, 2) the heterogeneity of the Iraqi population (ethnic groups), and 3) resistance to the growing phenomenon of ‘hollowing of the state. ’ It may be misleading to assume that the existence of these factors would necessarily lead to the establishment of a strong centralized government. But in Iraq, this is the case.The rise of radical Islam engulfed the politics of Muslim countries in the Middle East. Muslim extremists used the name of Islam to destroy the basic institutions of health, education, and welfare; replacing them with institutions that outrightly promote political anarchy, social stratification, and international terrorism. Iraq was able to resist the waves of radical Islam because of its highly centralized government. The government’s grip on the local population prevented dissidents from fully articulating thei r radical ideology.According to Huntington, the suppression of radical Islam can only be achieved through the establishment of strong authoritarian institutions; institutions which overtly rejects the fallacies of Islamic extremism (Huntington, 429). Huntington held that Islamic extremism is, in general, a stumbling block to self-determination and development (Huntington, 431). Iraq’s war with Iran simply illustrates the former’s need to defend itself from the waves of radical Islam. Kuznetsov argued that the Iraq-Iran war was a contest between orthodox Islam and radical Islam (Kuznetsov, 219).This was not the case. Iran’s ambition to dominate the Middle East was based on two factors: the need to propagate radical Islam, and security. Iraq successfully contained the Iranian threat because of the authoritarian nature of the Iraqi government. Efficiency, effectiveness, and brutality were the main qualities that enabled Iraq to resist Iran. Glazer and Moynihan argu ed, â€Å"Whenever a democracy has a large number of ethnic groups, it is likely to fall into political anarchy† (Glazer and Moynihan, 374).This statement makes sense. In many democratic countries with heterogeneous populations, there is the constant threat of civil war and political instability. This is obvious. Ethnic groups vie for power through the electoral system to control other ethnic groups (as in the case of Yugoslavia). Ethnic groups who lost in elections had no choice but to confront the dominant group through armed struggle. In Communist and authoritarian states, this was not possible.Communist and authoritarian states disregarded ethnicity as a factor of solidarity. Iraq was able to contain its heterogeneous population through systematic government control on all aspects of the society. Political instability could not exist because the government served as the unifying factor of the country. The establishment of a strong central government in Iraq may be regarde d as a measure to ensure the dignity and integrity of the state. Today, the phenomenon of ‘hollowing of the state’ is apparent in many democracies.This phenomenon is characterized by the weakening of the state as an institution, reduced economic sovereignty, and group power politics (Toynbee, 728). Every business plan, big or small, should start out with an executive summary that details what the company hopes to accomplish, how it hopes to accomplish it, and why this business is the right one for the job. Essentially, the executive summary is an overview of what will be included in the rest of the document and should inspire investors, loan officers, or potential business partners and clients to want to be a part of the plan. The objectives, mission statement, and keys to success are also principal components of this first section as they will outline achievable, concrete goals that the company plans to achieve through its business model. The Market Analysis Section In order to properly project what goods and services a company might want to offer in the future, a comprehensive market analysis section should also be included in your business plan. This section details exactly how well the current market in your companys business field is doing, including major and minor concerns that could affect your ability to achieve your sales and income goals. The section starts with an overview of the market your company targets (demographics) as well as industry analysis of what types of businesses typically exist within that marketplace and known participants who are your main source of competition within that industry. You should also include distribution, competition, and buying patterns alongside the companys main competitors and an overview of statistical figures from an in-depth market analysis. This way, investors, partners, or loan officers can see that you understand what stands between you and your companys goals: competition and the market itself. Animal imagery is prevalent in a variety of literary selections. This paper will focus on animal imagery in Henrik Ibsens A Dolls House by using the reader response strategy. In the play A Dolls House by Henrik Ibsen, animal imagery is used in the development of the main character Nora. It is also later found that the animal imagery is a critical part in understanding who Nora is and how other characters perceive her. Ibsen uses creative animal imagery to develop Noras character throughout the play. The animal imagery is carried out through the conversation between Nora and her husband Torvald. Torvald uses a lot of bird imagery because he thinks of Nora as lark. When Torvald says that it must not be done, Nora panics. When Torvald calms her down, he notices her frightened doves eyes (36). A dove is the symbol of peace, which is in essence what Nora is trying to do. If Torvald fires Krogstad then she will have to give him the money she borrowed, and it could destroy her life. Howev er, Torvald does realize that Nora is trying very hard to convince him to keep Krogstad at his bank, but he disregards it as her trying to keep things right and refers to her as a peaceful dove. Later in Act 2, Nora tries a different approach in keeping things peaceful by keeping Torvald from finding out about the money she borrowed. She even goes as far as calling herself all the names that Torvald calls her and says, I would play the fairy and dance for you in the moonlight, Torvald (34). She does this because she wants Torvald to be happy, and she knows that he is going to eventually find out about the money she owes. She is also stalling him so that he will not read the letter. For instance, after the offender receives the news concerning his mother’s death, he asks questions that the officers cannot answer. As the scene proceeds, the officer sits nearer to the offender and places her hand on him, and tells him that he understands how he feels. This is an instance of empathy since the officer surmises that she is aware of what the offender is experiencing at that time. Question 2 Some of the behaviors and comments that the officers exhibited proved helpful for the offender, Hank. For instance, the officers do not shift their contact from the offender. They maintain direct contact with him. Maintaining direct contact illustrates to the offender that the news they are delivering is authentic. Additionally, maintaining a direct contact with Hank illustrates attention on the part of the officers in delivering the notification. By maintaining direct eye contact with the offender, the officers express their plight to the situation by asserting various comments in order to help the offender become emotionally stable. For instance, comments such as ‘I am so sorry and I know it hurts’ by the officer after delivering the notification assist in consoling the offender and attempting to understand how he feels. Another behavior that they exhibit bases on the LUV technique. Right after Hank reacts to the news and abruptly stands up; they ask him to seat and li sten to him intently. After listening, they attempt to understand what Hank is going through and even provide possible strategies to mitigate the effect of the notification. This situation involves the use of comments such as, ‘Is there anything that we can do for you?’ Furthermore, the first officer places her hand on the offender’s arm in an effort to console him. However, comments such as ‘these things happen’ in an attempt to explain his mother’s death by the first officer are unhelpful. At this point, the offender is trying to accept the fact of his mother’s death. Question 3 There were no missed opportunities within the death notification scenario. The officers performed their duties to the latter. Concerning communication, the officers exuded responsibility while engaging in interaction with the offender. The officers also exercised response during the volatile situation. Even the offender asked unanswerable questions, the offenders still maintained the composure and did not react to the prevailing situation. Additionally, the use of empathy was also evident during the situation. There was also efficient knowledge of the respective audience by the mediators. In this case, the officers used various techniques based on the preference of their audience, the emotionally unstable offender. Respect was also evident in the whole notification scenario. The officers exuded utmost respect for the offender as a person and even respected his emotions concerning the whole matter. Question 4 Certain safety issues arose during the death notification scenario. One of the main issues that arose comprised emotional instability. Indeed, in a situation such as that, emotional instability was an issue that the officers required to put into perspective. This is because such instability may lead the offender to commit dangerous acts against the officers delivering the news. Another safety issue that arose during the scenario involved a possible attack from the offender. This is a safety issue that was likely to be evident during the scenario. Thus, it was important to employ two officers who would mitigate the situation if it arises. One officer focused on questioning the offender while the other one observed the movements and actions of the offender. This way, the issue of a probable attack from the offender may undergo mitigation due to the presence of another police officer. Question 5 If I were the officer, I would employ several strategies in addressing the offender’s situation. Foremost, I would employ the technique of presumptive questioning during communication with the offender. Understanding the situation that the offender is experiencing will require the employment of empathy. Being empathetic to the offender will enable me to connect with him personally. Validating my understanding of the situation will be possible through presumptive questioning. Presumptive questioning will focus on achieving resilience within the offender. Thus, in validating the offender’s situation, I will ask questions such as ‘When you faced a difficult situation other than this, how did you resolve it?’ Such a question will allow the offender to discover strengths that he used to handle other difficult situation.
